LECTURES with BARRY GREEN

The Inner Game of Music

The Inner Game lecture-demonstration is about overcoming the mental obstacles to performance, practicing and teaching through the master techniques of Awareness, Commitment and Trust. This session includes Green’s humorous signature demonstration of his distracting inner voice.  His session presents Inner Game concentration techniques with the audience as well as Inner Game DVD excerpts with ensembles. Green’s workshops engage the audience in lively group exercises in addition to spontaneous coaching of individuals that instantly transform a performers concentration from a place of doubt to a place of relaxed concentration. Bring instruments for this session.

Inner Game of Music Coaching Sessions: with individuals, small or large ensembles:  While Barry can present an overview of the methodology of the Inner Game of Music in a 45 minute to 1 hour lecture that includes some audience participation exercises, its most helpful to have an additional ‘master-class’ style session devoted to Inner Game Coaching where multiple participants can play a short piece and explore Inner Game techniques to address concentration issues. As many as 4-5 soloists or groups can be scheduled in an hour. Additional time can be scheduled for private sessions with individuals or small ensembles. However, a pre-requisite for this coaching class is that individuals must attend the prior scheduled Introduction to the Inner Game lecture-demonstration.

Audition Workshops/Career Placement classes: Barry is happy to visit existing seminar classes that are dedicated to preparing students for auditions, competitions, job interviews or entrepreneurial skills.  While this is not a structured lecture, Green would participate in a dialogue with the students and teachers that can include coaching or Q and A’s.

Large Ensemble Visits: Green is also happy to visit large ensembles (band, orchestra, choirs) for Inner Game Coaching sessions when requested by the conductor of that ensemble. While Barry doesn’t not actually conduct, he will partner with your ensemble director and coach the players through Awareness, Trust and Commitment skills to address challenges that either he notices or problems that are suggested by the music teacher/conductor.

The Mastery of Music

The Mastery of Music book coverThis inspiration workshop includes live PowerPoint interviews from several of the 120 great artists each famous for expressing a special gift of their unique artistry. When you are honored, hired or eulogized, it is for the unique ‘spirit’ you bring to your life’s work. Watch and hear Dave Brubeck, Joshua Bell, Bobby McFerrin, Frederico VonStade, Eddie Daniels and soul singer Nnenna Freelon share their insights to Creativity, Passion, Courage, Confidence, Tolerance, Discipline Humility, and Communication and Inspiration. This inspirational message highlights simple but unexpected pathways to mastering qualities of the human spirit that give you your unique voice.  (No instruments needed by participants) Barry also loves to co-host a round-table discussion on just 2 or 3 preferred topics from the Mastery of Music like discipline, and creativity.  Such a session would include 2 or 3 other resident faculty members from different disciplines of strings, winds, voice, percussion, dance, or theater professors. Topics can be decided from areas of most interest and available participating teachers for a multi-disciplined discussion.  (No instruments needed)

Bringing Music to Life

Bringing Music to Life is an innovative imaginative methodology to bring spirit and life to music. The workshop parallels the Inner Game of music in that it teaches three master skills: Breath, Pulse and Movement that allow the performer to channel inspiration and life in music, through the body of the performer. The workshop includes live musical coaching demonstrations with groups and individuals. YouTube clips illuminate how famous jazz, hip-hop, Latin, classical and chamber music artist including Joshua Bell, Tito Puente, Oscar Petersen, Kronos String Quartet and maestro Leonard Bernstein use these master movement and breath techniques. Be prepared to model, imitate, conduct, jam, scat, move and groove as you recreate the music and bring it to life. Bring instruments.

The How and Why of Music Making:

In this two part lecture demonstration, Barry will explore HOW a performer communicates music. The answer to this challenge is that music does NOT exist on the printed page, on an instrument, with a bow, mallet or with fingers pressing down keys.  It DOESN’T reside in your instrument of choice. Rather this is all about YOU! Music comes from YOU.  It comes from your inner voice, the energy in your body and is expressed through the universal language of rhythm.

The WHY of music making highlights a message of our ever changing relationship with music.  Our reasons for engaging in music evolves as a child, as a college student, as a professional, as a possible head of a family or as in single retired musician. Green will highlight a way to keep this relationship alive, meaningful and fulfilling.  Bring instruments for this class. Minimum time for class 1 hour. (no instruments needed)

Class Visits

After Barry has had an opportunity to present an introductory lecture-demonstration, he can be scheduled for follow up master classes to studio classes (individual instrumental, keyboard, or vocal classes), pedagogy or research in classes in music education or performance.

STRINGERSIZE and/or BASSERSIZE

Green has created a new innovative approach to technical exercise for STRINGS based on simple exercises of scales, string crossings, articulations, shifting, vibrato, and more to popular music beats and videos. These sessions are ideal for music educators and string students and teachers of all levels. The class can be of any length but recommended minimum 1 hour. Minimum level should be high school music student. For more information, go to www.stringersize.com

Bass Masterclass

Barry’s was formerly Principal Bassist with the Cincinnati Symphony for 28 years and former Executive Director of the International Society of Bassists.  It’s highly recommended that he has an opportunity to work the local bass students and their teachers. The format can be either a bass master class or a bass technique class or both.

PERFORMANCE or LECTURE DEMONSTRATION CONCERTS

MOST ALL of Green’s presentations will require a media cart or playback capacity including a video beamer-projector with either VGA or HDMI input that would be run from my own MacBook computer plus a mini plug output for sound-audio. I will have adapters. I’ll need to be able to control the volume of the media from my computer or a device next to my lecture area.

If there are collaborative keyboard artists on the faculty who would like to participate in a public or in-house concert, and if there is time for rehearsal, it is possible to present a unique concert. All Barry’s concerts include some kind of video playback. One program called: Music with a View, includes the solo bass with either keyboard or an instrumental duo partner (violin, bass, flute or other).  The message of Green’s concerts are all connected to his Mind-Body-Spirit pedagogy and appeal to a general music audience of all ages.

WHEN it is not possible to collaborate with a resident faculty partner (keyboard or other), Green has THREE 20-minute condensed multi-media narrated productions that are originally 55 minutes in length. They are based on the story a performing artist in three stages of their life: as a young student, a young concert artist and a distinguished master musician/teacher. These productions can be presented without ANY local collaborative artists as the music, narration and visuals are all on the video and Barry performs live with the recorded media.

The three stories (like a Karate Kid story for music) are highlighted with video trailers on his website www.innergameofmusic.com, under: Anna’s Way, Anna’s Gift and Anna’s Promise.  These mini-programs can be performed as part of a lecture demonstration when the pedagogy of the story fits the interest of the class.  Or they can be combined into a lecture concert of 60-90 minutes in length.

These 20 minute condensed ‘play along stories of Anna’ were created for Green’s 2017Australian tour performed in Perth and in Canberra in both concert settings and as part of some pedagogy classes.  In order to present these programs, Green needs a bass speaker to amplify his bass plus the same playback system of audio and video that he would use in his lectures.
